“We are not furnished, as the lower animals are, with instincts that get us through the lifecycle with minimal help from others. We are unfinished creatures requiring complex and extensive assistance in every part of our being, and language is the means for getting it.” - Eugene Peterson, Answering God This contrast — the “lower” animals are complete; the “higher” not so much — is humbling. And no matter how highly we think of ourselves, we know that we are in a constant state of both insufficiency and hopefully, growth.
