this is somewhat more related to bitcoin, but it's the reason by extension that ethereum exposes a JSON-RPC api rather than a rest/grpc api. bitcoin core originally had no api to interact with the node to access account info and blockheight. so satoshi, in a somewhat ad-hoc way, added simple json-rpc support so this could be queried from the CLI when running a node and then ethereum and many other chains chose to keep with the "standard"
