My impression is that this is due to the average reading comprehension for US adults sitting around 9th-10th grade level. Thus YA prose is more comfortable for many adults to read.

I think it’s worse. Most never leave high school behind as their arrested development stage and can only really identify with coming-of-age protagonists. Also why origin stories are the most popular kind superhero story and franchises keep getting rebooted.

Yeah, I just looked it up and adult reading comprehension is closer to 7th grade level. 😣
