or it devalues the hard work that goes into one of the original movies because the art style ends up everywhere that no one finds a compelling reason to watch the movies themselves

The IP loses value when its plastered all over social media and people are making unauthorized merchandise - this isn't like when people would pirate a movie or a song and check out other works by the same artist. When anyone can make a studio ghibli picture/movie the artistry is gone.

You are correct that it's different than pirating a movie—in that case you are literally stealing a released body work. In this case, you're driving hype and shared interest toward the IP by meme-ing.
