How can AI just not get this right?! It's not exactly difficult compared to other things it's capable of.

it must be that you can't set a parameter on this specific thing. It's just odd that it seems to be a recurring theme in AI portrait work. I expect future art historians will use it as a method of dating AI work. The famous six finger period, as important a movement as the Renaissance. 

Although if you gave it carte blanche, maybe it's simply a penchant.
