It's opt-in. If you don't want to do it, don't do it. One the biggest complaints from new users is people can't find their friends.

Yes, this was my biggest hangup when I first joined. I logged in and knew nobody and cast into the void for a month and then returned to X until my friends eventually showed up here. I think this is a nice add!
