TIL: New Zealand isn't *officially* a part of any continent... ... but it's situated on top of a huuuuugeee underwater land mass called Zealandia, aka "the 8th continent" I know I know, sounds made up, DYOR 🤷♂️

Depends who you ask really. Educators on every continent have a different preferred definition for continent according to their own particular bias (for example South Americans are taught that all the land from Chile to Alaska is “America” and that’s why they get so out of sorts about Americans calling themselves that. Some definitions prefer contiguity, some culture/language, some tectonic plates… it’s a bit of a mess really. And yes, Oceania is the messiest of all.

huh, and here I assumed these were just undisputed concepts my whole life, oof! I was trying to remember from my schooling if the 7th continent was Oceania or Australia... the latter sounded familiar, yet exclusionary to all of the other countries in the region to where I was like "that can't be right... 🤔" Long story short, went down a rabbit hole to figure out what continent New Zealand and friends belonged to 😅
