I don't know where to cast this but I am so curious about it. It's currently "Prime day" on Amazon and lots of things are on sale but when you look at the price history NOTHING is really on sale. I have had Keepa installed on chrome for as long as I can remember, it's an extension that inserts a price history graph into the Amazon page. Amazon raised the prices on every item that I have looked at and then marked it down so it looks like it's 30-50% off. some items are even marked on sale for 30% off and cost more than they cost last week. Isn't this illegal? I have an Etsy shop and they say that this is considered illegal price gouging if I do this. How are they getting away with it with tens of thousands of products?

This is a normal Amazon M.O. and lots of consumer protection groups warn about this and a lot of โ€œBlack Fridayโ€ sales as well. They start artificially raising the prices a few months ahead of time to make it look better at the sale time. Itโ€™s a terrible business practice but seems to be acceptable. I see this a lot with apps and subscriptions too. I dislike it.

it's only illegal if laws are enforced amazon has left it's expansion phase of keeping prices low to grow market share and if now in exploitation mode having driven most online competition out of business unless it's some niche thing bezos was the one keeping prices down and he's off enjoying his money now, now investors want theirs i only use Amazon for convenience, if I want better prices or higher quality items i find brick and mortar retailers are the way to go if i want it fast, and direct from china (eg AliExpress) if it's not time sensitive filling the platform with cheap dreck was a terrible move IMO, because Amazon now is basically just AliExpress where you pay double with a handful of actual quality products mixed in but more expensive than physical retail the only advantage they have left is convenience
