Just saw Sir Kenneth Branagh play King Lear at The Shed in Hudson Yards. The whole cast (Royal Academy) was super solid, and Branagh delivered the best “Howls” I’ve ever seen in person. Heartbreaking. I’ve puzzled over Lear as a play for a long time. This time it occurred to me that it’s Shakespeare’s orthogonal argument for why Christianity should exist — suffering of this magnitude without redemption would be too misanthropic.
