I’ve always wanted to know how you did this collection (initial idea, prompting strategies, problems encountered)

took a couple of months of non stop prompting and then whittling down, i think 100k images were created? something like that, 1661 made the cut. wanted to see how much juice one could squeeze out of 'purple cat' motif given AI tools available at the time. tried to break the AI as much as I could. referenced a lot of random art history stuff rattling around in my memory. tried to make the most diverse NFT collection ever created!

Also, this collection grows on me not only bc of how uncanny it is, but also bc as time passes it’s more and more clear that there’s something that ties the collection together: a state of culture (early fc) *and* a state of technology (early ai) at a very specific time. It’s weird to watch that all become “nostalgic” and think that will only increase over time.

AI tech moves so fast that you sort of speed run the 'dated' to 'retro' thing. and sometimes once the tech advances you can't even recreate a look from a specific time if you try as the models fold in on themselves. for example, i tried making some expansion packs based off the midjourney version i was using for these, something like v4 and it no longer looks or feels the same.

Totally – speed running nostalgia. Wild.
