Gray America: A July 4th Reflection

Aristotle asked in his Politics: Is a nation what it is bc of its people or its land? 

Is it like a river? Which even though the people entirely change — like running water — is still called the same river? Or is it like Heraclitus’ river, which always flows with new people and hence never technically stays the same?

He ultimately answers: Neither. A nation is less like a river, and more like music: What makes music what it is not the set of notes used to make, but its overall harmonic organization. What makes a nation what it is also its organization — one might say, the idea that animates it. 

America is one of the greatest political ideas in the history of human existence. 

It is not just some land. 
It is not just some people. 

America is an idea.
