Star Trek was competence porn, we watched it because we wanted optimism and faith in society to do the right thing. The West Wing is making a comeback for similar reasons.

mmm definitely a lot of wholesome optimism, but dunno if i'd put it in the "competence porn" category (recurring theme of catastrophes handled by calm and collected people who are good at their job).
