Not exactly true for Europe. While technically you could get it on the plane (with blades less than 6cm), it usually gets confiscated. It is up to the discretion of airport security on how they interpret "sharp object". If it got through, this was a mistake (or laziness) by them. It may go once or twice, but it will eventually get taken. If you absolutely have to have one during your trip, buy one at your destination. https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/carry/luggage-restrictions/indexamp_en.htm

Again, you may have run into people that do not care or are just bad at their job. Source: had a Victorinox huntsman confiscated, and one time with a companion I got sent back so I can put it in the checked luggage. Carriers were Lufthansa and Ryanair, so two of the biggest ones in EU. Different airports. Sure, going over Switzerland airports, you can buy pocket knives products (now, it was banned for a long time after 9/11), with some restrictions, as they are the most bought present there (with chocolates, of course). But I never bought one, as I didn't want to risk an overzealous TSA agent confiscating it. If the knife is a present from someone or a cherished memory, I'd rather put it in the checked baggage or leave it at home (and then buy one at a destination).
