I think another factor in this narrative is that it is being shaped, pushed, and amplified by liberals in the US and Europe who have benefitted immensely from this corrupt and corrupting system. 

They can turn a blind eye to inequality, the wholesale demotion of the labour class (always antagonistic to them), and even a return to heavy handed violent imperialism in the global south. But they cannot accept redistribution of their wealth nor power. 

So expect a lot more of this messaging. It’s crucial to the survival of the most bankrolled folks on the planet.

On the narrative pushback against the left from the “progressive”  thought leadership of the world.

tl;dr it’s self-serving misdirection carefully crafted to sound rational but which clearly does not hold water given historical context or modern day nuance

we must define "progress" in the very first place,

most of the time that thought leadership is used against the people as you pointed out.. by corrupt politicians, those who want to keep their position, salary and privileges and save their asses..

well, their definition of progress is individual progress, their individual progress to be honest..

we need less of them in the left.. sadly, parlaments are full of these guys..

how we do to create a definition of progress able to bring illusion and hope to the people in short term,, that's the question.. 

historically, the left won the mind of dreamers but todays dreamers cannot imagine the next month.. nor the next week.. on this context, the fake security of right and far right capture minds very easy.. create a fake a problem, be the only one protection.. and ofc blame the woke virus or the foreign to get primitive emotions in the mix..

we need to define progress in a short term, and build it
