I don’t disagree. But I also believe institutions in the sense of places to gather around shared purpose are very important. I’m not religious and have negative associations with church, but I do believe that the best argument in favour of going is that: shared purpose, community building.
Now you can get that from social organizations, clubs, sports, community work, etc—and you should—but the specifics of gathering around education itself, is one of the great forces for good.
This can evolve. And is. Reading clubs, hackathons, maker spaces are all part of this, but there is something to be said for mentorship and an education steered by someone who has devoted a career to understanding a field of study. 1 reply
