Thinking about transitioning from Apple Music (paid streaming + many of my own on device albums), to Roon. Would just combine torrented and purchased albums into a library I could access anywhere. Is anyone currently using Roon? (I think I saw @matthewb is). Would you recommend it? And are you running the Nucleus or an alternative server solution? Do you self host or use some sort of cloud-based server hosting solution?

I've been using Roon for several years and I recommend it highly. Love it so much that I paid for a lifetime subscription ($700 at the time) without the slightest hesitation, and feel like I've already gotten my money's worth several times over. It's ideal for hardcore music nerds like me who like to build lots of playlists. I use Roon for many hours every single day. My Roon core that stores all my music files is just a drive on a Windows desktop PC, and I came of age long before the rise of streaming so my entire music library (about 500GB) is all owned by me and self-hosted. Wouldn't have it any other way. Haven't used Nucleus so you'll have to ask elsewhere about that.

Just so I understand, do you have to keep that windows pc running 24/7? Do you have some sort of private vpn into it or how is it secured?

My use case is probably quite rare: I only use Roon on my desktop PC. No other devices. (I do keep backups of all my files elsewhere, of course!) For roaming I use the Bandcamp app.

Ah fascinating. I would probably use my iPhone mostly and maybe my Apple TV if there’s a way to do so.

Don't know about that but the Roon Community Forums are a great place to search for info. If you do try Roon I'd be interested to hear what you think!
