If you are on the fence about learning to dive but perhaps fearful about being underwater, or are generally curious about the hobby/sport, feel free to ask questions in this channel! As a PADI instructor and AIDA freediver, I'll be happy to help

I am not an ā€œoutsideā€ to the sport but (funnily) very afraid of the drill where you take off your mask underwater. Itā€™s stopping me from enjoying the sport.

I've heard that a lot, actually. Obviously getting saltwater in your nostrils and eyes (if you don't close them) is far from pleasant

Itā€™s not so much the stinging sensation (which I can deal) but the sense of asphyxiation? Always seem to instinctively breathe in when I mask off.

Even with taking a large breath through the reg before hand?

Canā€™t recall honestly. But for me itā€™s like a reflex canā€™t help it. And itā€™s a self reinforcing anxiety loop.

Probably something you could build muscle memory for in a pool setting with snorkel and mask, and doing it repeatedly until it feels comfortable /doesnā€™t trigger the reflex Alternatively (also in a pool), fill the mask gently but donā€™t remove it, to get used to breathing through the reg while your face is in water
