If you are on the fence about learning to dive but perhaps fearful about being underwater, or are generally curious about the hobby/sport, feel free to ask questions in this channel! As a PADI instructor and AIDA freediver, I'll be happy to help

I am not an “outside” to the sport but (funnily) very afraid of the drill where you take off your mask underwater. It’s stopping me from enjoying the sport.

I've heard that a lot, actually. Obviously getting saltwater in your nostrils and eyes (if you don't close them) is far from pleasant

It’s not so much the stinging sensation (which I can deal) but the sense of asphyxiation? Always seem to instinctively breathe in when I mask off.

Even with taking a large breath through the reg before hand?

Can’t recall honestly. But for me it’s like a reflex can’t help it. And it’s a self reinforcing anxiety loop.

Probably something you could build muscle memory for in a pool setting with snorkel and mask, and doing it repeatedly until it feels comfortable /doesn’t trigger the reflex Alternatively (also in a pool), fill the mask gently but don’t remove it, to get used to breathing through the reg while your face is in water
