A few months ago, I read a report on the LNG market outlook by the excellently named Institute for Energy Economic and Financial Analysis (“IEEFA”). The data was at odds with what I had seen elsewhere, which was why I was interested. But something about the tone of the report rubbed me the wrong way. It just seemed ‘preachy’?? Like, no pretense to objectivity. So I read the bios of the authors. Everyone. EVERYONE. at IEEFA has a renewable energy background. Today, I read a respected African economic journal quoting verbatim from that report. And that, ladies and gents is my first time seeing the power of a lobby in action.

I think people now recognize the game Chelsea is playing. Spread cost of purchase over long contracts, recognize income from sale all at once (even when no money has been received) Terrible accounting principle. Hope they don’t bankrupt the club.

Chelsea seems to need someone to explain the difference between profit and cashflow. These games they are playing with accounting profit for PSR purposes are not novel. Many have tried it in many different industries. But cash is king and every club and player out there should absolutely be hosing them out for cash.

Maybe it is the other way around. Lack of agency (big government, broken community relationships etc) plus media that actively aims to be emotive (because emotion sells) breeds frustration. It’s perfectly rational under those conditions to choose to disengage and play a different game.
