I also suspect this dovetails with the increased use of therapy-speak, which clinicalizes and desensitizes you to others’ needs. That’s important for a therapist, but not a friend. Similarly; cutting yourself off from world events can be beneficial, but can also go too far. You stop being an agentic person.

Maybe it is the other way around. Lack of agency (big government, broken community relationships etc) plus media that actively aims to be emotive (because emotion sells) breeds frustration. It’s perfectly rational under those conditions to choose to disengage and play a different game.
