I’m coming around to the idea that being “early” or “first” is worthless. It’s a weakly held thesis but was validated today when I learned CANADIANS INVENTED BASICALLY ALL THE MAJOR SPORTS and then went on to lose supremacy in all of them except hockey https://www.cbc.ca/sportslongform/entry/how-canada-invented-american-football-baseball-basketball-and-hockey

Pickleball is the most obvious recent example in sports. Early players became pretty good against each other, but no one really took it seriously. As it gained popularity, it attracted more money & sponsorships, and better athletes. Then the tennis players showed up. And pretty well dominated the previous group.
