I'll be honest, I don't actually get what it means to think from "first principles". like is the whole idea to keep on asking "why" till you get to the core layer of the question?

how do u do this in an efficient way? and how do u avoid tricking urself into believing ur thinking critically vs actually doing it

That's my understanding of it, yeah. I think in layers/fundamentals, symptoms/diagnoses, assumptions/facts, etc. Why *that* — why not something else? — not just why.

Not sure about efficiency, other than practice and learning to spot common layers & fundamentals.
