I find this to be untrue. To paraphrase popular X poster Roon, most of what is thought of is alpha is levered beta. To pursue your true self, real alpha, takes a lot of courage — and is very lonely, too. Your world shrinks; you are often scorned

I’ve liked that Nin quote for a long time but never thought about it the way you describe. I see the truth in your view: the more You you become, the more Other you become to others. I’ve always read Nin to say “life” is the world around you, the possibilities, the depth. I hadn’t put it together with that quotation until now, but I’ve observed that we tend to optimize for our own comfort, which gradually reduces the scope (in breadth or depth or both) of the world that we interact with. To break free of that ratcheting constraint takes tremendous courage like you say.
