Hot take 🌶️ : The concept of gas will go away within a year. Gas is an infra concept, not a user-facing concept. In the same way that people don't need to details of monetary relationships between ISPs, or how ISPs use BGP etc, users don't need to know there was a minimal gas payment to settle a transfer.

Smart accounts and AA are definitely a solution for this but I wonder if this can somehow be baked into the chains or rollups themselves

I think whom pays should be unrelated to the what the end user sees. Base might sponsor the fees with their paymaster vs the app itself, but that is isolated from the user in any case
