In 1803, an Italian shoemaker named Matthew Lovat suffered a religious and psychological crisis that led to severe physical asceticism. Two years later, he attempted to crucify himself in order to experience the sufferings of Christ. He nailed his hands and feet to a cross he had made. But before he died, he was saved by passersby and taken to a hospital. But after recovering a year later, he tried to crucify himself again, this time to save people and was taken to a mental hospital. He died a few months later in the same mental hospital.
