I work in a middle school. It’s oversimplification to be sure. But it’s also a large part of the problem. We don’t allow phones in our schools for this very reason. The kids need to be taught how to pay attention. You can’t just take the phones away and it suddenly fixes everything.

That gets tossed around a lot, but I promise you there is plenty of blame to be shared by almost every corner of society. Hunger, homelessness, addiction, a myriad of political and social dynamics outside the control of both kids and their parents… the blame itself is part of the problem. If everyone who had a finger to point used that hand to pitch in and help pull a kid out of the muck, that might help.

do you think the blame lies on the parents more than the phones?

that's my belief, at the end of the day it's their responsibility to be teaching these kids why paying attention matters on a daily basis
