It is a mammal of the order Carnivora, family Raccoonidae. Adult length 40 - 65 cm, tail length 20 - 40 cm, weight 4 - 10 kg, males slightly larger than females, smaller. The face has black eye patches and is nicknamed the "masked bandit". The tail has 5 to 7 black and white ring stripes.
The entire body fur is a mixture of grey and brown, with albino varieties. The claws cannot be retracted and are not sharp, but they are very sensitive and can catch flying insects, and have an abundance of tactile cells that can be relied upon to measure the weight, size and material of food, as well as its temperature.
