Adding on to this convo: why is texting still so popular in the US? For text it's ok, but it's slow. And sending/receiving media only works half the time. And, of course, no encryption (but I think most people don't care about that). When most folks didn't have smartphones, it made sense. But now? 🤨

I'm from Spain and I mostly text my friends and family over WhatsApp. Typing on the phone is a broken experience in general. I have to correct so many typos that I try as much as possible to use the desktop version so I can use a regular keyboard 😆 What strikes me is that WhatsApp has e2ee as other services (actually the encryption is based on the signal app) and people don't use it. But getting back to your question about texting: could ur be that people are afraid of recording themselves? In Spain, at least people use a lot of audio notes to avoid typing.

Good question (and insight)! I don't think voice notes even occur to people here 😆

Here people do it so much that there are even jokes around it. It is pretty common for people to hear everything at 1.5x or even 2x
