as someone who straight up asked @dwr.eth for a job once and regularly gets tagged in “hire ted” casts or DCs i’m 10000% aligned with his take on focusing on product and not marketing for growth in fact, my POV is that it would be dumb AF to hire a marketing team right now what would they do? what would i do?

Mm depends on your definition of marketing. They might build/maintain relationships with popular casters/communities and provide a regular flow of feedback into MM. You could call this product/sales/marketing. “But that’s dan/v’s job!” Yeah I know. They doing ok. If they needed help this is what a “marketing person” could do.

lol yes you nailed it at the end Dan, Varun, and the entire technical Merkle team are in constant contact with their popular casters and communities to bring in someone whose exclusively focused on marketing is actually inefficient because everybody else can go from feedback to product improvement near instantly

I agree that adding a buffer between Dan and feedback is inefficient. Being said, i think Dan/V lack diverse perspective. All feedback flows through this west-coast growth mindset. You can’t change that simply by hiring someone, it’s a tricky problem. But I think it’s worth thinking abt.

can you provide an example where you’ve seen that happen and what’s been the downside / negative outcome?

Mmm I’d rather not go too far down this rabbit hole because it can disheartening for me. But let’s just look at Facebook and X. Everything about them is SV growth - nail down some numbers and optimize. The outcomes are social networks which cause division, misinformation, and addiction. This is where the growth-over-everything mindset will eventually lead us on FC, too. Of course they are very impactful and commercially successful. So maybe I am just an old man yelling at a cloud. But i wish for this place to be better, if it can be.
