why do we (society) obsess over and often hate tech billionaires but don’t bat an eye at music billionaires (taylor swift, jay Z), sports billionaires (magic johnson, lebron), or entertainment billionaires (george lucas, tyler perry)?

My hunch is that we (society) see tech billionaires as exploitative / using their power to influence policy and gain more power which cycles into more exploitation, contrast to LeBron who’s rich bc he’s good at basketball and we just love to watch him play

yes, agree that’s how we see things. LeBron’s $$ initially came from NBA contracts, but what about the majority of his wealth today? His $$ from Nike and the NBA are closely tied to China, yet tech billionaires will get criticized for doing business there. Double standard, no?

Agreed, it’s a double standard, esp if you have that knowledge / insight. Then there are the well-intentioned but naive (eg my dad and mom) who can’t really piece that together. Tech billionaires steal our data, basketball players are just amazing athletes! Not to be a conformist but maybe we blame the media hehe
