why do we (society) obsess over and often hate tech billionaires but don’t bat an eye at music billionaires (taylor swift, jay Z), sports billionaires (magic johnson, lebron), or entertainment billionaires (george lucas, tyler perry)?

Tech disrupts industries which creates disagreements which in turn affects public perception Entertainment driven wealth doesn’t necessarily disrupt orthogonal industries (<celebrity> isn’t disrupting real estate with their investments in real estate) resulting in fewer disagreements and thus lesser conflict

Apples and oranges imo. Tech billionaires are more like oil, telecom, and other business billionaires that create empires around infrastructure with tangible consequences to the layman. Music and sports *are* entertainment which we can opt in/out of consuming those products, and is generally inconsequential.

i think because they see it as "business person taking advantage of others to make money" saying they don't deserve the money, the workers do in the eye of the public, tech people are closer to traditional business than athletes or musicians are most people don't think of "business" when they think of music or sports

Entertainment billionaires require some semblance of talent and usually remember where they came from. Tech billionaires can nepo their way through life and have ridiculous world views.

Taylor swift, jay z, magic johnson, Lebron, George Lucas, and Tyler perry aren’t trying to reform society in their own images and don’t use phrases like ‘woke mind virus’

apart from all the reasons mentioned, probably that tech billionaires are the least entertaining/charismatic of all the billionaires.

My hunch is that we (society) see tech billionaires as exploitative / using their power to influence policy and gain more power which cycles into more exploitation, contrast to LeBron who’s rich bc he’s good at basketball and we just love to watch him play

Mood affiliation. Start with people you don’t like and find characteristics to criticize them on.

For this I think it's because we understand at a viceral level Lebron or Taylor give to us. So we're happy they are rewarded Unless you're a business nerd it's hard to understand the value Twilio creates

Because they are not jerks (or at least they appear not to be). Just to clarify, I don’t like any of them.

Music, sports and entertainment billionaires make us feel something magical. Tech billionaires generally manipulate our feelings 🤷

Interesting question! Maybe it's the promise vs the delivery. Tech people say "we will make the world a better place!" So can be critiqued in this area. Entertainment people say "we will entertain you" and so are critiqued in this area.

Oh I’ll hate on Tyler Perry. The entire Madea franchise set black people back hundreds of years.

You have already gotten great replies and many of them are so good and so spot on. My 2c— and I wrote about this a few weeks back — the problem is that tech billionaires (or at least some of them) often wade into areas where they shouldn’t and have no expertise & come across as evil & selfish.

Balaji’s recent episode on MoZ with @dwr.eth where he contrasts the scale of expenditure of large companies/billionaires and large governments was pretty stark revelation. Companies are nowhere as big as the biggest governments.

Very interesting question Arendt observed that groups attract violent hatred when (1) they have some perceived political power but (2) do not have total political power (Without #1 you are a non-threat. With #2 you must be respected) Checks out w Dixie Chicks? They got hated when they made a political effect
