The rational actor (consumer) is an imaginary friend that capitalists invented to camouflage greed as humanistic “demand.” I disagree with Ayn Rand, but at least she was honest in saying: 1) Inspired selfishness is divine 2) We owe civilization to autoerotic megalomania 3) Contrarians inherit the Earth She was wrong, but I respect her for declaring her wrong take plainly rather than the mealy-mouthed silliness that is contemporary business and economic theory.

What i never understood about her: if all behavior is in inherently selfish (sure, ok) wouldn’t selfish behavior that also helped others be more divine? seems you can subtract selfish behavior from both sides of the ethical equation.
