decided to start a new house beat...here's an hour timelapse of me building it from scratch, condensed to 30 seconds. i decided to start by bootlegging/copying the beat from the john summit remix of i remember by deadmau5...the audio is what i exported at the very end of the hour

yep...for loopy genres like house+techno, i always lay down my main perc+motifs in session, then record to arrangement foleys, fx, pre-recorded loops etc go straight into arrangement

i strongly prefer midi bc i can control so much from the simpler or sampler and then draw notes out for melodies i know it’s not a common approach but it works well for me

nice! i'm very inspired by john summit's take on plugins...he mostly does everything using stock ableton. the only vsts i usually reach for: - serum for synths - LFO tool for sidechain (but i use the stock compressor + glue compressor in a lot of chains, too) - ozone for mastering (rely on this less and less as my mixes have gotten better, but it's pretty good for hitting target loudness) if i did more vocal processing, i'd certainly use more i don't really believe in fancy transient shapers and whatnot...i use a limiter on almost every channel to wrangle transients, with a compressor if i need to boost the tail of a sound all-in-all, i think plugins are great, but can't fix a lack of mixing knowledge and skill. i just prefer having fewer distractions
