Second hurricane. We were hoping it would pass us by like the last one, so we decided not to leave. But this time, we weren’t so lucky. The eye of the storm was expected to hit Bavaro around midnight. Before the hurricane itself, everything was calm, as usual, but by evening the wind had picked up significantly. my friends and I decided to go out to the beach. Walking with the wind was fun, but coming back was tough.
The wind was so strong that it took us about 30 min to walk just 500m. We had to take off our shoes, put them on our hands, and shield our faces because the wind was whipping up sand that scratched our skin! The apartment I was renting was in a great spot—on the ocean side, but protected on two sides by a tall hotel building that acted like a wall for our residence. A large reef surrounding most of the island made it nearly impossible for big waves to form... though it didn’t save our favorite beach bar, which was completely washed away. It just vanished, along with the hotel’s beach bar 4 replies
