Wasn’t that documentary amazing? The Great Wall of China is so fascinating. I can’t believe it’s over 13,000 miles long!

Yeah, it’s mind-blowing! I always thought it was just one continuous wall, but it turns out it’s made up of different sections built at different times.

Exactly. Some parts are thousands of years old, while others were built during the Ming Dynasty. I think that was around the 14th century, right?

Yeah, the Ming Dynasty did a lot of the construction we recognize today. They used bricks and stones to make the wall stronger compared to the earlier sections, which were made of tamped earth.

And to think they built it to protect against invasions. It’s crazy how much effort and manpower it must have taken.

I read somewhere that millions of workers were involved, including soldiers, peasants, and even prisoners. Sadly, many of them didn’t survive the harsh conditions.

I know. The idea of people sacrificing so much to build something that monumental is both inspiring and heartbreaking. But it did serve its purpose for a long time, right?

To some extent, yeah. It slowed down invaders and allowed China to maintain control over its borders. But it wasn’t always completely effective. The Mongols, for instance, managed to get past it.
