One of today's /allotment missions was to fork & de-weed this unused area, make a big ol' mound and plant a tomato. Before (right) and after (left) pics below. Fucking horse tail is out of control in our area, they're horrible. On the left corner there's some perennial spinach that just self-seeds everywhere, we cut lots of it down, and ate the tender leaves tonight. The right side are some elephant garlic that didn't fit into the allocated area... garlic overflow 😹🧄

That is a great plan! We tend to try perennial varieties whenever possible. On perennial spinach: it lacks the "teeth grittiness" of normal spinach, the leaves are slightly tougher. But cooked it's pretty similar. We tend to keep cropping the young, tender leaves, and those work very well raw or cooked. They self-seed like crazy, which is both good and bad. When plants get too large/bolt, you just either lift the entire thing and compost, or chop it down hard, and keep picking the young shoots. You can also just take entire plantlets as they self-seed. So overall it's pretty versatile, I'd say! Definitely worth a try.
