Figured I'd share my favorite footwear, I've worn these in the snow capped Swiss Alps (this was admittedly a mistake) to summiting volcanoes in Guatemala, to the leech infested jungles of Sri Lanka. I've cycled hundreds of miles in them and run half a marathon in them (the other half I ran fully barefoot). These are the Genesis Huarache Sandals from Xero Shoes. They're nothing fancy, just 5mm rubber soles with polyester straps. The company even sells a kit for those who wish to make it themselves (though I wouldn't recommend it, it's too much work). I have had a couple duds where the straps snap soon after purchase, but for the most part they are reliable for many hundreds of km. They're fantastic for travel; they are light weight (130g each), plus all the weight you save by not packing socks. Your feet don't get smelly either due to not being enclosed. Among minimalist footwear I've tried, I've found these provide the most seamless transition to full barefoot running.

Regarding barefoot running, I enjoy it because the added tactile experience *compels* me to be more present. I also tend to step much more gingerly when barefoot, which leads to much less strain going to the knees. Not that you're likely to have knee problems anyways, your feet will probably give out first. I know it's not for everyone, but I enjoy it.
