I watched 3 of the highest rated Simpsons episodes of all time, (from seasons 4 and 5, 30 years ago!) and it wasn't as good as I was hoping it would be. The need to explain/drag out simple jokes messed with the pacing, and Homer's idiocy is just annoying imo. That being said, there was a certain innocence/simplicity that was endearing along with some genuine creativity. For kicks, I then watched the most recent episode from this year, season 35, and it was just sad. Couldn't even watch all of it. The formula is similar, but more crude somehow. Gone are the clever references, in are cheap pop culture references grasping at relevance that is long gone.
