"Denali" means "The High One" in Koyukon Athabaskan, reflecting its sacred status among Alaska Natives.
In 1896, a prospector named it "Mount McKinley" after then-presidential candidate William McKinley. The name was officially changed back to Denali in 2015 to honor Indigenous heritage.
