I’ve talked to people in healthcare companies and the way they talk about human lives is digusting. Just statistics and unfortunate nature of the business and ultimately works to provide more and better care to more people. Utilitarian except shitty calculations with human lives as cost. Well then healthcare CEOs dying is also just a statistic on the way to improving healthcare and unfortunate but worth if it leads to healthcare reform. See how it works when you flip it? It sucks but I just can’t seem to bring up more sympathy beyond the most generic of “killing is wrong.”

how does this apply to doctors? the work they do is incredible. i can't even conceive how they can do what they do, but there is a feeling inside me that tells me that also part of what you say here is true -and actually necessary- for many of them. how could you deal with all of what they have to deal, every day, if there is not a numbing and transformation of the perception of what a human life is? and that's not directly their fault. it is a consequence of all the social structure that has been created in order for us to put all the responsibility of our own well being and health in their hands
