I can cast to zero channels now. The new default “invite only” behaviour is not a good way to build a social network, imho. If I am locked out of “where the discussion is happening,” then I imagine *many* more users will be too. The app becomes dead on arrival for 99% of us.

Your personal 5 minute inconvenience is not a fair critique without considering the whole picture. If the choice was between the above or a platform with 80% bots and spam. In the age of AI this will be an increasing problem that all networks will need to solve and the solutions will look like some variation of gated channels. Can it be improved? Sure. But atm the barrier to entry is so low that if you spent the time looking to join channels as you did this cast then I’m sure you’d see how easy it is.

It took me a few seconds to send a cast—how long do you think it will take me to get back into all of the channels I used to be interested in? Is “send DMs to each of these channels’ mods asking for them to let me in” really how this app is going to scale?

Some of them have set up frames, most will have them set up in the coming days. Some will be faster to get back into, some slower. Small price to pay to not have to deal with hundreds of spam comments, or comments about how auto spam detection is hiding real accounts. The quality in the channels has gone up so much higher, same with the quality on my feed. But fair enough if this is just my experience and your feed has degraded since this change. We might be having different experiences. As for how it will scale, if the quality stays high, then it is more worthwhile to get in. Generates demand for channels which will create supply of channels. Not to mention it's now easier to curate since you're not spending hours fighting bots which you were if your channel was of any decent size.
