i occasionally wonder if achieving “mass adoption” means everyone joins us and our culture or if it means that everyone uses our tools to create their own cultures increasingly leaning towards the latter

Definitely the latter. We build the tools. Others build, abstract, and productize the tools. Mass adoption happens on top of the products, and the end-user doesn't know much about the tools underneath.
