perhaps i've been living under a rock, but i just recently discovered procedural SQL languages and i'm having a really hard time understanding when that is better than plain SQL. plain SQL is still a lot easier to read and gives a lot more control, especially now that we have AI coding assistants to optimize queries

what's really strange is AI assistants seem to default to procedural SQL languages and every time i have to specifically instruct them to use plain SQL, when plain SQL allows it to better optimize the query it's trying to write
