Seeing a lot of similar “actually Gwern moving to SF is bad” takes. My guess is that the source is insecurity. Many people feel trapped w golden handcuffs & envy a life outside of the rat race. When they see someone independent capitulate it threatens their belief that escape is possible. https://x.com/thecaptain_nemo/status/1857695752572780833

no, there's definitely an echo chamber with people who become frustrated with schmoozing leeches, when the proverbial oxygen is critical to accomplishing anything that uniquely ambitious beyond M&A'd SaaS. SF is overfit on monoculture, and many cherish Gwern's divergence, an intellectual salve against the often-repeated, often-mid hype cycles that play the game of telephone with some upstream exploration. the golden handcuffs inevitably invite podcast-life crisis. individual success being a drop in the bucket, many feel their life is overinvested for the recognition they've received, likewise Gwern's spike in popularity is a warning shot to their ability to prevent fading away.
