"Typically, the No. 1 pick in the draft comes into a situation where it's going to take a while for things to come together," McCaskey said Thursday, via the Chicago Sun-Times’ Patrick Finley. "Caleb's got a lot of support -- a solid defense, good receivers, good offensive line, a good running game, tight ends. But I hope people will be patient. There are going to be growing pains. He's going to make mistakes. That's part of the learning process for any young quarterback."

Week 1 NFL picks, predictions, best bets from Vegas expert: This 3-team football parlay pays almost 6-1 The Week 1 NFL odds were released after the NFL schedule came out in May, but a majority of NFL bets roll in during the days leading up to the openers. While making NFL picks against the spread remains popular, Week 1 NFL parlay picks are also being assembled as bettors look for the opportunity to multiply their payouts. Key Week 1 NFL lines via the SportsLine Consensus include Chiefs (-3) vs. Ravens, Eagles (-2.5) vs. Packers, and Lions (-3.5) vs. Rams. All those games will receive plenty of national attention and adjustments to the NFL betting lines during the Week 1 NFL schedule. However, savvy bettors are taking a close look at all 16 games as they look for the best values in the NFL spreads. Before you make any Week 1 NFL picks or NFL parlays, be sure to see what SportsLine senior analyst Larry Hartstein has to say.

Bears chairman George McCaskey stresses patience with Caleb Williams: 'There are going to be growing pains' Ample reason for optimism exists within the Chicago Bears' 2024 roster. The majority of the eyeballs and attention are focused on rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, however. Among the myriad excited for Williams to lead Chicago into a new era is Bears chairman George McCaskey, but the grandson of George Halas is likewise urging a patient approach with the 2024 NFL Draft's No. 1 overall pick.

Patriots HC Jerod Mayo says 'we've made a decision' on starting QB; announcement expected Thursday Jerod Mayo is keeping the New England Patriots' QB1 decision to himself for one more sunrise. The first-time head coach told reporters on Wednesday that he has decided whether Jacoby Brissett or rookie Drake Maye will open the season under center, but wants to communicate it to the players first. "I know everyone wants to know that. I'm going to talk to the individual players tomorrow -- I'm going to have a team meeting tomorrow -- and then I'll get it to you guys," Mayo said. "Yes, we've made a decision; just haven't communicated. And honestly, I want those guys to hear it first from me before they hear it from someone else."

Ja'Marr Chase, Bengals remain in discussions to make him highest-paid WR in NFL Ja’Marr Chase has been a welcome sight at Cincinnati Bengals practice recently, his coach expects him to play Week 1 and he's amid contract talks for a hefty extension. Things seem to be trending in the right direction for the Bengals' top wide receiver. Chase and Cincinnati remain in discussions regarding a potential long-term extension that would tie him with the Minnesota Vikings' Justin Jefferson as the NFL's highest-paid wide receiver or would push him above Jefferson by one cent, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday.

Broncos moving on from veteran WR Tim Patrick Tim Patrick's comeback efforts have encountered a fork in the road. The Broncos are moving on from the veteran receiver, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported Monday. Patrick hasn't been officially released, so Denver could still trade him prior to Tuesday's cutdown deadline at 4 p.m. ET. Patrick's NFL journey has occurred almost exclusively with Denver, where he joined the Broncos' practice squad in 2017 after brief stops in Baltimore and San Francisco. The undrafted free agent from Utah worked his way from obscurity to relevance, serving as a helpful depth option before emerging as a quality No. 3 receiver, posting consecutive 700-plus-yard seasons in 2020 and 2021.

The final week of the NFL preseason is here and cutdown day isn't far behind. Last week around the league, rookie quarterbacks continued to wow from Jayden Daniels standing tall, Denver's Bo Nix and New England's Drake Maye taking steps toward QB1 status on their respective teams and Caleb Williams showcasing his improvisation skills. Speaking of improvisation, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes successfully pulled off a behind-the-pack pass in Saturday's preseason game against the Detroit Lions. Elsewhere, while one QB competition is over in Las Vegas, another continues to brew in Pittsburgh. New England Patriots edge rusher Matthew Judon was traded to the Atlanta Falcons, who also signed safety Justin Simmons. A few contract situations remain in the spotlight, too, with Dallas Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb and QB Dak Prescott still at the negotiating table.

Colin Kaepernick won't be joining Chargers as a player or coach this season After telling USA Today earlier this week that he had spoken with Colin Kaepernick about potentially joining the Chargers' staff as a coach or a consultant role, Jim Harbaugh said Thursday that his former quarterback definitely won't be part of the team this season. "I love Colin, but he's not going to be on the coaching staff, which is set for this year. And he's not going to be playing on the roster either," Harbaugh said.

When analyzing NFL rosters, it's important to remember that it's all relative. It's easy to say a team is in "good shape" or "loaded" at a particular position, but the fact is each unit is only as good as its relative strength compared with the league's other 31 teams. That might seem like common sense, but you'd be surprised what you can learn and how your opinions can be adjusted by ranking each positional unit from all 32 teams. This is a project I've done (and kept updated) each of the past several offseasons, which has led to many interesting revelations, including the breakouts of teams such as the 2017 Jaguars, 2020 Buccaneers, 2022 Eagles and 2023 Dolphins.
