He did what he did with as much fervor as a Nazi authority figure would’ve, as documented through the original Nazi movement and modern Neo Nazi movements. It’s not a simple hand wave, if that’s what you’re trying to argue. 

Everything has context, subtext - and based on your response, you seem to want to ignore all of it.

what if nazis instead of this gesture were doing something more trivial, would you now be forever ashamed to do it?
