Does it matter whether you own your social graph if you arenโt guaranteed distribution to your audience?

Social graph ownership is actually not the thing that should be in question here Owning your social graph is supposed to prevent deplatforming/censorship. So a better question may be: does an unruggable social graph solve this problem in the age of algorithmic feeds. Feels like you need a guarantee of distribution too

sadly, it doesn't for big creators. we worked with +30M following creators for over 2y, they mainly cared about monetization, all the other onchain privileges aren't sexy for them, yet

hmm, how about this frame: does it matter whether you've imprinted on the dark forest, if everyone's highest affinity is to a cozy, gated corner (or personal AI brainrot)? to which, I still think yes. but there's definite asymmetry. one could argue that brutal utilitarianism take over; distribution being contingent on impact, and profit being imperfect shadow of that. good is still better bad or nothing, even if not for the best. not sure how this all pans out, but distribution w/o ownership isn't working out, and the churn is a bug at the most holistic scale.

@shazow.eth has opinions on this. Personally I think itโs still valuable, but mainly for influencers who are still mainly communicating in one direction . If youโre a community member, owning your social graph does nothing if no one sees your posts.

It is totally useless for most people in most cases. Distribution is key, and I think Bluesky is doing a great job at it with its curated feeds. Decentralisation wonโt helps here as nobody can compete with Warpcast distribution and dominance. They have $150m in bank (at least), and unless another heavily funded client comes up, they will be the main access point to Farcaster for a while. Decentralisation of distribution is stronger with Lens as there are more ยซย bigย ยป clients, but I am not sure it helped its growth.
