The openai being bad at naming models thing used to be quirky but it’s reached the point where as someone that actually follows frontier model development I have no idea what model is what anymore

it's quite confusing for anyone who is just a regular consumer. so many of my friends have a bad experience with chatgpt and i'm like what model did you use and they don't even realize there is a concept of different models etc., let alone which one to use

not "so many" tbh but enough to be notable

I’d be curious what their use cases are bc even the free models are pretty good most of the time in my experience 

Except when it comes to stuff like image generation then you need to know which model is the sota vs the others that just use dalle
