Personal Story Having a hearing loss can be difficult. But trying to explain it to someone who has normal hearing can be even harder. For example, try explaining the difference between “hearing” and “understanding” to someone with normal hearing. It can take hours. To help provide a better understanding of what it’s like to really live with hearing loss, I am explaining things from my personal experience: Hearing loss can increase stress, induce sorrow and cause frustration and embarrassment. 2/n I used to feel : I felt very stressed and tense. I spent the whole time concentrating, and more than once, felt the need to take [the earplugs] out because it was interfering with my work. I felt insecure as if I had to stay on my toes to not miss anything. I caught myself repeating what co-workers said for confirmation. I wouldn’t take my eyes off them because I didn’t want to miss anything, and it was embarrassing to ask them to keep repeating things. Nothing was as clear as I felt it should be and that was frustrating.

3/n I decided to do: I started to embrace myself and I decided to pursue what I am good at. I am open minded and decided to tell the issues to people because I want to be confident and clear in my life. So, I will fight what I want and make it happen. No matter how tough it is, I always desire to do. The more challenge I face, the more solution I find. I set my mind to work that way and it helps every time. When I started to look at things positively, everything will happen that way. Accept yourself, things will change. I learnt not to complain.

4/n Hearing loss can impact your independence and ability to communicate effectively I used to feel: “Conversing with people was very difficult. I constantly had to say “what” and ask people to speak louder. At times I just shook my head and made believe I heard what people said, just to avoid embarrassment. It became very frustrating, and I even began to feel depressed that I couldn’t communicate normally. Speaking on the phone wasn’t always possible. I kept on worrying that I wouldn’t hear people when they were going to speak to me.

5/n I decided to do: I started to hone my listening skill in different ways. Let me share you a secret – Simple : I always focus at one person at a time and learnt to listen carefully. It helped to make progress at many levels. I must admit that it didn’t happen overnight. Involving in group discussion was extremely stressful but I decided to overcome. I just avoid it in casual meet but I do participate if its business related. It is easy to do since its revolving around the particular topic in business oriented. The point is many people do not know about the issues what people are going through despite everyone has their own trouble. If you find someone having hearing loss, try to figure out to be flexible in communication.
