The origin of the idea, meme, as I understand it, is an idea that gets passed along through contact and exchange. Its Counterpart is the gene that gets passed along through sexual exchange. So yes, bitcoin was a meme that has spawned an entire new understanding of currency and economies. A highly prolific meme with many offspring. This in no way minimizes its value.
